Welcome
Southern MotorSports Safety is pleased to offer motorcycle education courses developed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF), under contract with the Florida Rider Training Program of the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Since 1973, the Foundation has established internationally recognized standards of excellence in rider education and training, licensing improvements, governmental regulations and public information.
As of July 1, 2008, per s. 322.12(5)(a), F.S., every first-time applicant (regardless of age) for licensure to operate a motorcycle or trike must provide proof of completion of a motorcycle safety course before the applicant may be licensed to operate a motorcycle. Riding a motorcycle without the endorsement is a criminal violation.
Southern MotorSports Safety is affiliated with Pensacola State College. This relationship allows Southern MotorSports Safety to administer the mandatory basic motorcycle rider’s course for licensure on behalf of the state.
Classes are offered for novice and for returning riders. Southern MotorSports Safety provides the bikes, all classroom materials and the helmets. If you are unsuccessful we will re-test you for FREE within 60 days.
Our Services
The MSF Basic Rider Course is a research-based and action-oriented core curriculum offered to riders of varying levels of experience. This course teaches fundamental skills and is not intended to produce the superb riding skills of an experienced rider; rather, it provides instruction in basic entry-level skills for a new rider to begin practicing and developing the mental and motor skills important for safe street operation.
The Basic Riders Course includes basic motorcycle operation, maximum effective braking techniques, turning skills, obstacle avoidance maneuvers, classroom instruction and ten hours of “on cycle” training. Rider coaches for the program are all friendly, knowledgeable and experienced motorcycle operators who are nationally certified by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) as well as the Florida Rider Training Program (FRTP). We strive to provide a positive / low stress learning environment.

• Practice braking, evasive maneuvers, and hazard avoidance exercises that may save your ride and hide from serious damage, injury or death.
Intended Audience:

Motorcycle Safety, sure, but what is an Endorsement, and do I need one?
- To ride a motorcycle legally in Florida you must have the words “Motorcycle Also” or “Motorcycle Only” on your driver license. You can only add that endorsement by completing a 15 hour motorcycle safety course. If you ride any motorcycle, scooter or trike with an engine at least 50cc or larger, you need the endorsement
If I’ve been riding for a long time, do I need the class?
- Yes, it’s the only way to get the endorsement added. You will build your skills even if you already know how to ride, so don’t worry…you’ll have fun too.
What if I have an out of state license?
- You can still take our class. After your class, you can ask your home state if they will add an endorsement with your completion card, or exchange that license for a Florida one with the endorsement on it.

WHERE ARE CLASSES TAUGHT?
- Our training location:
Pensacola State College 1000 College Blvd 96 Room 9663
HOW MUCH IS THE COURSE?
- The Basic Rider Course is $235.00.
IS THE COURSE FEE REFUNDABLE?
- All fees are nonrefundable unless students call 850-290-4455 or email [email protected], no later than 7 days prior to the scheduled class convene date.”
CAN I TALK TO SOMEONE ABOUT THE COURSE?
- Sure, call 850-290-4455 with any questions.
WHAT WILL I NEED TO BRING TO THE COURSE?
- You will need:
1. Over the ankle footwear (please use footwear that allows you to “feel” the foot controls. Shoes/boots with a large heel or big toe box make it difficult to shift, especially for the ladies. Boots with steel toes or a hard toe box do not allow you to feel the shifter.)
2. Long pants
3. Long sleeve shirt (or Jacket) If hot, a light colored shirt works best.
4. Full-fingered gloves (We can provide gloves if needed)
5. D.O.T. Helmet (We can provide a helmet if needed.)
6. Eye protection Note: Glasses are considered eye protection for the purpose of this course.
7. Sunglasses and sun screen are optional but recommended.
8. If it looks like rain, consider bringing rain gear as we will still ride!
ADVANCED SKILLS COURSE Q&A
Do you provide a motorcycle, or do I use by own bike in the course?
- Since ProRider classes are designed to help you handle your bike with greater ease and confidence, the classes are conducted on your own bike, allowing you to truly learn it’s dynamics, handling, capabilities and limitations.
If I have been through the Motorcycle Safety Foundation or Rider’s Edge Courses, do I need ProRider Training?
- Yes you do, we are an advanced training that teaches Police Motorcycle Skills that are only taught in the 80 hour police motorcycle training. This class is the next level of training that will improve your riding ability and riding confidence and may save your life!
What kind of bike can I bring to the course?
- The best bikes for this course are ones that are close to factory stock – most any street-legal motorcycle can do these exercises, but bikes with tall handlebars (ape hangers), sport bikes with lengthened swing arms, and dual-purpose bikes (street/dirt) with off road knobby tires may have difficulty in the course. Feel free to contact your local instructor with any bike modification questions.
I’m new to riding – is this course for me?
- We recommend that you have some riding experience – at least a season under your belt – or have successfully completed an MSF rider class or equivalent school prior to attending this course. ProRider is aimed for experienced riders who have successfully completed these other classes and are looking for the “next level” of challenge and improvement. This class is beyond the level of training you receive from MSF type classes.
I’ve been riding for years. Will I learn anything in this course?
- Absolutely! Many of our instructors are seasoned police motorcycle officers who have worked many crashes involving “experienced riders.” Often, these riders have the crash avoidance “head knowledge” but have never physically practiced those maneuvers and developed the appropriate “muscle memory” to successfully implement them. You will leave this class a better rider!
Will I drop my bike? I do not want to damage it.
- Far more bikes are dropped in a basic MSF class then ProRider. The only way to guarantee that you will not drop your bike is never to take it out of the garage or leave your driveway. Unfortunately, even in the most basic MSF classes people sometimes drop their bikes. However, we make every effort to help you safely perform these exercises without risk to you or your bike. Our exercises start “slow and wide” and we gradually increase the challenge as your gain confidence and skill. While we do not predict or anticipate bikes “dropping”, we do provide you with the opportunity to remove your saddlebags, wrap your engine guards with rubber hose, or take other safeguarding measures. We do not anticipate any injures or any damage to any motorcycles.
Will I receive a discount on my motorcycle insurance for taking this course?
- We provide a training certificate that many insurance companies honor and many do offer a discount on your insurance rates upon successful completion of this course. You may want to contact your agent for more details and to find out if you are eligible for a discount upon completion of this course.
Is this a rain or shine class?
- While we should develop skills for all types of weather, we don’t like unnecessary risk. Many of the exercises, especially the crash avoidance skills, require a dry surface for maximum safety. Each ProRider Training Site will closely monitor weather forecasts prior to the class and offer rain dates if the crash avoidance portion must be postponed or cancelled.
